The JC's History

Having started in the late 50ies , Bamberg`s Jazz has managed to overcome its odyssey. Back then people devoted to Jazz were roaming unorganized but enthusiastic about the music through the city. The oldest fans will most certainly remember locations like "Café Jäger", "Wilde Rose", "Luitpoldkeller" and other places in the city of Bamberg. At first, those people's enthusiasm could not be halted by any lack of comfort or other setbacks.

However, in the early 70ies, Bamberg's  "post-war-jazz- movement" shipped off into the doldrums. It was an ordinary advertisement placed in "Fränkischer Tag" in 1974 ("wanted: Jazzfriends") that gave a new impulse to the scene.

In the beginning there were only five people, including Randolf John, who held the opinion that Bamberg could provide more than just Beethoven and Brahms in a "Kaisersaal-" and "Kulturraum"-atmosphere. An idealistic plan was drawn up by the founders, which included the following ideas:
-By no means "Vereinsmeierei"
-An offer especially for younger people
-No profit should be obtained
-to create an alternative to conventional music offer.

On September 17th in 1974 a kind of constituted assembly was  initiated during which more than one hundred participants resolved the foundation of "Jazzclub Bamberg e.V.". Years later- a permanent domicil was found in the "Obere Sandstrasse 18" which required intensive renovation. Numerous volunteers helped, giving the vault its standard it has today with its lighting, ventilation, furnishing etc.
